What are Dental Crowns?
Our Jericho dental crowns are full coverage restorations that sit on top of your natural teeth or attach to implants. Made from porcelain, our crowns look and feel like natural teeth and are designed to match surrounding teeth.
In most cases, we use dental crowns to protect and strengthen teeth that have been compromised by breakage or decay. However, crowns can also replace a missing tooth when paired with a dental implant.
Reasons to Get a Crown
Dental crowns are ideal for treating teeth that are damaged but do not need to be extracted. For example, some cavities are too large to treat with a filling. In these cases, a dental crown covers the tooth to minimize further deterioration.
Dr. Bral might recommend crowns for the following reasons:
The Jericho Dental Crown Procedure
Getting a porcelain crown typically requires two appointments.
In the first appointment, we’ll prep the affected tooth to ensure space for a crown to fit properly and remove the damaged areas. Next, we take an impression of your tooth and send this impression to our dental lab. While the lab creates your custom crown, you will be sent home with a temporary crown.
Once your new custom porcelain crown returns to our office, we’ll schedule your follow-up visit, where we will place your permanent crown. Dr. Bral will check how it fits onto your tooth and then bond it permanently into place.
Caring for Porcelain Crowns
With proper maintenance, you can expect your new dental crown to last for several years. Caring for your crown is easy. You only need to brush and floss daily like you usually would. Even though crowns cannot decay like natural teeth, they can accumulate bacteria around the edges of the restoration. Some people are hesitant to floss around crowns because they think it will pull it off their tooth. Fortunately, your crown is firmly bonded to the tooth, so flossing is completely safe.
We also recommend sleeping in a nightguard to prevent chipping or fractures in your new dental restorations.
